Importance of Mesothelioma Staging
When a patient receives a mesothelioma diagnosis, the oncologist will determine the disease's progression. Establishing the stage of mesothelioma is crucial in planning a successful treatment plan. Mesothelioma that is localized means the cancer is confined to the mesothelium's membrane surfaces. Mesothelioma is considered advanced when the cancer reaches the chest or abdomen wall, lymphatic system, lungs or other body parts.
Mesothelioma treatment depends on the location of the cancer, its spread, and the patient's age and overall health. This information allows the oncologist to recommend surgery; radiation therapy; or chemotherapy to kill off the affected tissues. The cancer specialist may also use two or three of these procedures. The chance of surviving mesothelioma is increased if the disease is detected in early stages.
Although cancer will affect 1 in 4 Americans, mesothelioma is rather rare. Little information is available of the survival rates at various stages of the mesothelioma.
